Moments Like These, Places Like This, People Like Us
    Series: None
Text: Luke 19:28-44. Jesus' Triumphal Entry represents the momentary acclaim on the part of the crowd for the miracle working Christ, but immediately afterward he weeps over Jerusalem, because he knows the adulation is short-lived, and that Jerusalem is missing the moment of God's visitation, not knowing what will really bring them peace. God uses a myriad of simple encounters to initiate his subversive kingdom agenda. They wanted royalty, he brought reality in the form of servanthood. They wanted a king on a throne; Jesus was that king, but the path to his throne would lead to the cross. Rather than seeking a hero, we need to be responding to the call of a savior who really does have the ability to meet not only our "felt" needs but the deepest needs of every heart. His love is experienced in the most commonplace situations: in moments like these, in places like this, among people like us. It is in these places and spaces his kingdom rule and reign begins. It is in these places where transformation takes place.

    He Bore Our Shame
    Series: None
Shame is distinct from guilt or conviction. Guilt says, "You did something bad." Shame says, "You are bad." Lewis Smedes, former professor at Fuller Seminary, defines shame this way: "A vague, undefined heaviness that presses on our spirit, dampens our gratitude for the goodness of life, and slackens the free flow of joy. Jesus bore our shame on the cross, enduring the most shameful treatment and death imaginable. His sacrifice liberates us from the shackles of shame, enabling us to live in the light of his love.

Don’t Call Me, I’ll Call You
    Series: None
In Acts 24:25 (17-27), Paul is before the governor Felix, who, after hearing the gospel, says, in essence, "Let me get back to you on that." This sermon explores "spiritual procrastination," the putting off of spiritual decisions, that can cause us to miss out on God's best for our lives.
